What stays on your device, and what doesn't.

Reader ("the app", "we") is a web browser with reader-mode extraction, text-to-speech, and translation. This page explains what data the app handles and where it goes. Last updated 2026-06-12.

What stays on your device

The following never leave your device and are not sent to us:

  • Browsing history, bookmarks, reading list, and reading progress.
  • Your blocked-sites list and per-site settings.
  • Voice, rate, pitch, and other app preferences.
  • On-device translation (Google ML Kit) and any side-loaded on-device model.

What is sent off your device, and to whom

  • Cloud AI translation (paid/trial feature). When you use the Cloud AI translation engine, the page text you choose to translate is sent over an encrypted connection to our backend ("reader-ai", on Cloudflare) and on to the AI model that performs the translation. We translate on the fly, per request; we do not keep a shared library of translated content. We retain only metadata about each request (timestamp, model, token counts, estimated cost, and your device identifier) for billing, abuse-prevention, and cost control — not the source text or the translated text.
  • Device identifier. To grant one free trial per device and to enforce fair-use limits, we send a per-device identifier (Android App Set ID, which is per-developer-per-device and resets on reinstall of all our apps) to our backend and store it with your entitlement/trial record.
  • Google Translate (web) engine. If you choose the "Google Translate (web)" engine, the page URL and content are loaded through Google's public translate.goog proxy and are subject to Google's privacy policy.
  • Ads (free tier only). On the free tier we show a banner via Google AdMob, which collects device and advertising identifiers to serve and measure ads. In regions that require it, we ask for your consent first (Google's User Messaging Platform). Trial and paid (Reader+) users see no ads and no ad requests are made for them.
  • Payments. Subscriptions are processed by Google Play Billing. We never receive or store your payment-card details; we receive only the purchase token/entitlement state needed to unlock features.
  • Translation reports. If you tap "Report translation," the displayed translated text, the page URL, and the model used are sent to our backend so we can review AI-output quality and safety.

What we do NOT do

  • We do not sell your personal data.
  • We do not run third-party analytics or trackers beyond the ads SDK described above.
  • We do not store a shared, redistributable copy of translated third-party content.

Data retention

Request metadata and entitlement/trial records are retained while your device remains active and as needed for billing, fraud prevention, and legal compliance, then deleted or anonymized.

Children

Reader is not directed to children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect their data.

Your choices

  • Use on-device translation (ML Kit) to keep translation fully on your device.
  • Subscribe to Reader+ to remove ads entirely.
  • Manage or withdraw ads consent from the in-app consent options where shown.
  • Clear local data any time from Android Settings → Apps → Reader → Storage.
